Letter To The Editor

To the editor:

Last month, your newspaper called attention to efforts by People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to stop the cruel and unnecessary experiments on rats and frogs that are currently commonplace in some biology and psychology classes at SVSU. Most colleges do not do the kinds of gruesome experiments done at SVSU. It is high time that SVSU practice kindness, not cruelty, to animals.

George Bernard Shaw believed that, “vivisection is a social evil because if it advances human knowledge, it does so at the expense of human character.” Actually, vivisection detracts from reliable knowledge because continued focus on animal research impeds scientific progress, keeping us from the development of faster, cheapter and better research methods.

Mr. Joel Freedman,

Chair of the Public Education Committee of Animal Rights Advocates of Upstate New York
